Today I am going to focus on the importance of our U.S. election and some cool facts I have learned from our history that are stirring in my spirit. Please, make sure you get out and vote today. Whether your state has historically been blue or red it’s important for you to vote. It’s part of the way God has called us to govern our nation. I firmly believe that if all Christians voted, and voted for righteousness, the whole system would be overturned for the better.
One of the books we have read in our homeschooling is A Children’s Companion Guide to America’s History by Catherine Millard. There are two incredible things we learned in that book that I wanted to share here.
The first is a meeting that took place on September 7th, 1774, before our nation had fully declared it’s independence. Thirty-six of our founding fathers gathered in Carpenter’s Hall in Philadelphia, PA for what is now known as the “First Prayer in Congress”. A local pastor, Jacob Duché, was asked to open the meeting with prayer to God. One of the things that he read was all of Psalms 35. I am going to put in a few verses from that chapter for us to declare together (1-4, 17, 26):
1Plead my cause, O Lord, with those who strive with me;
Fight against those who fight against me.
2 Take hold of shield and buckler,
And stand up for my help.
3 Also draw out the spear,
And stop those who pursue me.
Say to my soul,
“I am your salvation.”4 Let those be put to shame and brought to dishonor
Who seek after my life;
Let those be turned back and brought to confusion
Who plot my hurt.17 Lord, how long will You look on?
Rescue me from their destructions,
My precious life from the lions.26 Let them be ashamed and brought to mutual confusion
Who rejoice at my hurt;
Let them be clothed with shame and dishonor
Who exalt themselves against me.
Isn’t it amazing how much this fits even in today’s world? I love the fact that the founders of our nation had faith to believe these words and pray this prayer together. This is the real roots of our nation.
The second amazing thing we learned is about a quote originally made by John Adams that was inscribed into the State Dining Room mantel in the White House in 1945. In November of 1800, John Adams (who was our second President and the first to live in the White House) wrote this in a letter to his wife, Abigail:
I pray Heaven to bestow the best of Blessings on this House and all that shall hereafter Inhabit it. May none, but Honest and Wise Men ever rule under this Roof.
I have prayed that phrase many times over the last few months and agreed with that declaration that John Adams made. Imagine what our country will look like once that’s true again!
Final Thoughts…
I am going to close with a prayer. Lord, like it says in Psalms 35, let those be turned back and brought to confusion who plot our nation’s hurt. We say that no weapon formed against our nation will prosper. We agree with the prayers and scriptures spoken by our founding fathers that declared Your plans and purposes for our nation. May the Bride of Christ arise and do her part to govern this nation that You founded. May none but honest and wise men ever rule under the White House roof! Let Your light expose all that needs to be exposed, shine truth into every corner of our nation and set us free so that we can be free indeed!
