The last thing God showed me from the lunar eclipse was something He actually brought to my attention later in the day. During my time outside I spent a lot of time praying. I was seeking God for some specific things in my life and praying for the future of those in my household. Because of the two night watches I was in, I also spent time praying against curses that were surely being released on an event such as the lunar eclipse.
Later on, as I was thinking about the events of the night God asked me a question. He said, “Did you ever just worship me?” I knew going into the night I would be spending lots of time praying. I felt like there were specific petitions I had for the Lord. But His question made me realize I was so focused on my agenda I missed the opportunity to worship Him in the solitude of the night. Sometimes we get so focused on what we want God to do for us we forget to just praise Him for who He is. Are we only looking for the hand of God or do we want all of Him?
Truth be told, God could ask me that question every day and my answer would indicate that I should spend more time just worshiping Him. Too often I am looking for something to be healed and made whole, a question to be answered or wisdom to be provided. Instead of focusing on the issue or the need, do we trust God enough to know that if we just worship Him He will take care of the rest? Do we believe that our Father knows what we need before we even ask (Matthew 6:8)?
I’m certainly not proposing we never ask God for things or remind Him of promises we are looking to be fulfilled. The Bible explicitly tells us to do so (Matthew 7:7). I’m really just wanting us to take a minute and search our hearts to see if we are more interested in our agenda or God’s. Is there a healthy balance between what we desire from God and how much we desire Him? Do we truly believe that God is good and God is love? Do we trust that He knows the best ways to express those things? God should never be just a vending machine that we look to provide a treat every time we insert a merit token.
Final Thoughts…
One of the definitions of worship in Webster’s 1828 is to honor with extravagant love and extreme submission, as a lover. Isn’t this a beautiful picture of the most wonderful gift we can give to God? Our worship of Him shows that we trust Him, we are fully submitted to Him, and we love to love and be loved by Him. Worship shows that nothing else in this world compares to God or can fill us like God. Worship puts God on the throne of our lives above everything else. True worship comes out of a heart that recognizes who God is and who we are in Him. When we ascend to this place, everything else pales in comparison.
