This week my children and I were watching a Prager U video from a kid’s series called Unboxed USA. It’s a great way to learn more about facts from each of our 50 states. First of all, let me give a shout out to Prager U. They are a great source of current and historical facts in a conservative light. I cannot recommend them enough.
The state that we learned about this week was South Carolina. One of the mottos for the state is “Dum Spiro Spero” which is printed on their state seal. This Latin phrase translates to “While I breathe, I hope”. When I heard this on the video we were watching my spirit came alive. What if we all chose to live this way? What if every time the enemy tried to sling a stone of doubt, worry, or hopelessness we said, “Am I still breathing? Then I will continue to hope in my God.” God tells us He will finish what He has started. He says He will never leave us. Why then do we doubt?
Well, life isn’t perfect, and we try to take these imperfections and form them into something our brains can handle. This is exactly the issue. We take what is imperfect and try to make it perfect using something else that is imperfect. The solution? We need a perfect Father with higher thoughts and ways than our own. And we need to continue to hope in Him no matter what the enemy of our soul and spirit tries to shake us with.
How do we strengthen our hope when it waivers? The Word of God. Here are a few scriptures we can read over and over until our all that’s left is faith, hope and love:
Lamentations 3:24
24 “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,
“Therefore I hope in Him!”Psalm 25:5
5 Lead me by your truth and teach me,
for you are the God who saves me.
All day long I put my hope in you.Psalm 130:5
5 I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,
And in His word I do hope.1 Corinthians 13:13
13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
Look at this definition of hope from Webster’s 1828:
1. A desire of some good, accompanied with at least a slight expectation of obtaining it, or a belief that it is obtainable. hope differs from wish and desire in this, that it implies some expectation of obtaining the good desired, or the possibility of possessing it. hope therefore always gives pleasure or joy; whereas wish and desire may produce or be accompanied with pain and anxiety.
Final Thoughts…
Often times our light at the end of our tunnel comes down to one four-letter word: hope. No matter what miry pit we find ourselves in if we can put our hope in the God that has never broken a promise, we will prevail. Jesus already defeated death and darkness on the cross once and for all. He promises us abundant life in this earth and eternal life in the one to come. Our only expectation is to not lose hope.
