Today I am going to share a brief personal experience and also what God said in the midst of it. Last Thursday evening (8/17/23) I was having a difficult time falling asleep. It was a humid, still evening and my mind was consumed in many things besides sleeping. I eventually came out to the living room, laid on the floor and poured out my heart to God in prayer. After 30 minutes or so I started to doze off, still on the floor. Not long after, I was suddenly awoken by the sound of the bathroom door slamming and opening as the wind whipped through the house.
I got up and looked out the back door to the woods behind our house. It was like someone had flipped a switch. The evening that had been filled with great stillness was now a deluge of swirling winds.
After a brief prayer over our structures and vehicles, I stood at an open window and just watched. The trees were bending and swaying in ways that didn’t seem possible. Some were unable to withstand the torrent as I heard limbs cracking and breaking. It was one of those windstorms where I first heard what sounded like a train coming in the background and then a few moments later I could feel the gush of wind travelling in the window. As I continued watching I felt God speak, “Winds of change.” It was like the scripture in Acts 2:2 where they were celebrating Pentecost and they were filled with the Holy Ghost:
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
My spirit perked up and I was even more drawn to the incredible events happening outside my window. There was more swaying and cracking and howling train noises. Instead of being afraid I just stood there gazing and saying, “Bring it on God.” I don’t know about you, but there is always at least one thing in my life, my family, my state, my nation that desperately needs God’s winds of change. The other scripture that comes to mind is John 3:8:
8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
Final Thoughts…
I want to ride that wind train with God and go where He is going. The enemy of course was whispering lies in my ear and trying to downplay the significance of what God was doing. Too many times in my past he has succeeded in getting me to discount what God was doing and where He was wanting to take me. It was a lack of trust and faith and a spirit of pride constantly getting in the way. Much of what we experience in our walk with God comes down to a choice. We can choose to say, “Oh that’s silly”, or “That doesn’t make sense”, or “I must not have heard God clearly” and then we may miss what God is wanting to do. God is always working and there is always some part we play in that. It’s just a matter of us having the ears to hear and the faith to believe and do what He is saying. What if we just take the leap of faith when we see God moving? And it may not even be a physical action it may just be getting our soul and mind into a place of agreement. Tell your soul that you believe in what God is saying and you are ready to follow where He leads. In the days that have followed that windy move of the Spirit I will say something has shifted. God is on the move, and I am ready to board that train!
